What is Spam and why do I receive it?

Spam is a term used to describe any unsolicited email you receive, the digital equivalent of the junk mail that you get through your door. However, because hundreds of thousands of email messages can be sent for free it is likely that you will receive a number of Spam messages every day, especially if your email address is widely distributed such as on a website.

Genuine marketing emails are often not really a problem, but the majority of Spam emails (unlike unsolicited post through your door) are fraudulent, try to trick you into giving them your bank or password details, or contain links or attachments that will infect your computer if opened.

The majority of Spam messages are sent by criminal groups who don’t care if you have signed up to receive them or not. They get their email addresses by automated programmes scouring the web collecting any email address they come across, or from hacking into legitimate contact lists.
